Wide-ranging exhibitions are held from photography to contemporary art

Kahitsukan – Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art was opened in 1981. The word “kahitsu” in its name translates as that “all things might not really be as one is led to believe,” expressing a wish to maintain freedom to doubt set theories. Although set in the heart of the lively Gion area, the museum offers you a quiet haven once you step inside. Its fifth floor features a Sun Garden and a tea arbor designed to allow visitors to view the exhibits in natural light. The museum holds special exhibitions of modern and contemporary paintings, crafts, photos, calligraphic works, and more, centering on the collections of works by Japanese-style painter Kagaku Murakami, oil painter Kaoru Yamaguchi, and multi-genre artist Rosanjin Kitaoji. In particular, its collection of works by Rosanjin Kitaoji is known as one of the best in Japan in terms of both quality and volume. You can also enjoy viewing the permanent exhibition of his works in the Rosanjin Kitaoji Room in the basement in addition to an ongoing special exhibition.
