Everyone could possibly want to know about manga
No longer is “manga” just feasted upon in Japan, the rest of the world is lapping it up too. And, as awareness awakened to this new cultural phenomenon, the Kyoto International Manga Museum (established in 2006) was quick out of the blocks to gather, preserve and exhibit such manga material and then examine the culture behind it through surveys and research.
The collection boasts approximately 300,000 manga materials, with 50,000 of these – dating between the 70s and now - lining a museum wall from top to bottom in bookshelves that add up to 200 meters in length. Visitors can use the museum like a library to read the manga where they like as long as they are within the grounds of the museum. What is more, there are various events to compliment the permanent exhibitions as well as a “Manga Studio” where actual manga production work can be seen.
The setting for this manga extravaganza is a classic one in a former elementary school dating back to 1929.
