Exhibiting pieces of modern art from western Japan, especially from Kyoto

The museum holds, researches, and exhibits a wide variety of works, mainly pieces of modern art from Japan and abroad, including paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, photographs, and design works. Its collection and exhibition activities focus particularly on artists active in Kyoto and other areas in western Japan, while taking into consideration the overall history of modern art in Japan. The Collection Gallery on the fourth floor is dedicated to the permanent exhibition, with exhibits from the museum’s collection—Japanese paintings, Western-style paintings, prints, sculptures, ceramics, lacquerware, dyed fabrics, crafts, and photographs—rotated constantly. The gallery sometimes displays works related to ongoing special exhibitions. The museum is also famous for its collection of Japanese engraver Kiyoshi Hasegawa. Workshops and lectures are also held here in conjunction with special exhibitions. The museum stays open at night depending on the period of the year. On the first floor of the museum is an admission-free space equipped with a museum shop, a cafe, etc., open to visitors free of charge.
