Highlights

A nostalgic line up of steam locos, electric trains and shinkansens

54 train cars on display, from steam locomotives to Shinkansen cars!

This museum opened in April 2016 as a comprehensive museum of Japanese railways. It is an advanced renovation of its predecessor, Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum. Its main highlight is 54 different train cars preserved and exhibited in the main building and roundhouse, representing the rolling stock that has supported industry and transportation in Japan. They include a D51 engine, an iconic steam locomotive in Japan; a 1800 series steam locomotive engine, which was imported from the UK for use on steeply sloping tracks; and a lead car of the 500 series Shinkansen, which was the fastest in the world at 300 km/h at the time. You can closely observe these precious train cars.
There is also a variety of hands-on experience areas, including a steam locomotive trial ride area and a driving simulator area. This museum is surely enjoyable for not only railway enthusiasts but also children and their families.
