This museum comprises a main building used mostly for exhibitions and an annex (the former Bank of Japan Kyoto Branch, an Important Cultural Property) used for various special events in the hall such as exhibitions and concerts.
These introduce to the public a wide range of Kyoto history and traditional cultures in an easy-to-understand manner. A special exhibition hall occupies the 4th floor of the main building and is used for popular exhibitions of valuable materials and superb art and craft works in Japan and from around the world. The 2nd floor is home to general exhibition room that introduce visitors to the history and culture of Kyoto via materials and visuals that follow the events of the city from Heian to Showa period.The Film theatre on the 3rd floor screens masterpieces from the Kyoto prefecture collection. These floors also are the venues for planned exhibitions on themes related to seasonal events, owned the treasures by temples and shrines in the city, Kyoto prefecture's works and the collections of illustrious local families.
The annex was designed by Kingo Tatsuno , who can be called the founder of modern Japanese Architecture and his apprentice Nagano Uheiji. It was once the former Bank of Japan Kyoto Branch, and still clearly preserves the prestige of those days.
