Experience the History of Sake Brewing and Sake Culture in Fushimi

A museum housed in a renovated sake brewery built in 1909 (Meiji 42), operated by Gekkeikan, which was founded in Fushimi, Kyoto in 1637 (Kan'ei 14). This museum showcases numerous historical materials illustrating the history of Gekkeikan, which has led the development of sake brewing in Fushimi. Ancient sake brewing tools such as wooden barrels, sake casks, and paddles (designated as Kyoto City Tangible Folk Cultural Properties) are displayed, offering a place to contemplate the craftsmanship of artisans from bygone eras and experience the traditional culture of sake brewing.
At the end of the tour, visitors can select three types of sake from a variety of different types to enjoy a tasting. There is also a well that draws clean, low-iron water ideal for sake brewing, which is used in the adjacent brewery. This water can also be enjoyed as a palate cleanser during the tasting.
The shop inside the museum offers a delightful shopping experience, featuring a selection of fine articles from Kyoto artisans and specialties such as Nara-zuke pickles and sake-flavored manju, alongside a range of Japanese sake from Gekkeikan’s Brewery as the main focus, including limited editions.
