Know・Learn・Enjoy Fragrance World

Shoyeido was founded over 300 years ago by Hata Rokuzaemon Moriyoshi as a business called Sasaya, and the third generation, Moritsune, began to dedicate himself to incense making. Today, skilled artisans continue to manufacture the products using traditional methods while also actively incorporating new technologies. Within the same building as the Shoyeido Kyoto main store, there is an actual production site where traditional Japanese incense is produced. Visitors can see the incense production process, from dough preparation to the final packaging. (Advance reservation required at least one week prior to the desired visit date.) Adjacent to the Kyoto main store, “Kunjyukan” opened in 2018 as a museum of Japanese fragrance and a place dedicated to encounters with scent. In the space called “Koh-labo”, visitors can experience the scents of raw materials used in incense making, as well as other fragrance-related elements. The museum includes a space where you can experience Shoyeido's fragrances, as well as a gallery and hall that serve as a place for people to interact with fragrances.
