Highlights

A replica of “Yuin” the tea arbor built by Sotan, the grandson of Rikyu, as a place to use in his second retirement from active life. This tea room truly embodies the spirit of tea.

Learn about all aspects of the culture of tea

This art museum holds special exhibitions related to the tea ceremony, mainly displaying tea ceremony utensils such as hanging scrolls, tea bowls, and flower vases, as well as related arts and crafts, and literature. The second floor gallery features a replica of Yuin (an Important Cultural Property), one of the most representative tea rooms of the Urasenke school, along with Konnichian, and visitors can tour the interior of the tea room. On the first floor is a tea ceremony area, where you can enjoy savor matcha green tea and traditional Japanese sweets (preference given to visitors with reservations and admission fees separately charged). You can have tea in a seat and receive an explanation of the etiquette on application. Tea service is not available on some days due to events and other reasons, so if you are interested, please contact with the museum in advance. In addition, the Konnichian Library is located on the second floor. This specialized tea ceremony library houses approximately 70,000 items, including books, magazines, and video materials related to the tea ceremony collected by successive heads of the Urasenke school. (Its business days and hours differ from those of the museum. Admission is free.) Anyone can view the materials by following the procedure (for reference in the reading room only).
