This gallery was established in March 2023 by the Nagamori Culture Foundation to introduce music box culture and related technologies, thereby delivering “sounds that resonate with the heart.”
The “World of Automata” zone soothes visitors through the endearing gestures of mechanical dolls, while in the gallery corridor, visitors can learn about the different types, structure and history of music boxes, which is sure to pique their intellectual curiosity. The Appreciation Lounge, a highlight of the tour, allows them to enjoy the concerted sounds of a selected collection of music boxes, gramophones, and self-playing pianos. The “Music Box Showcase” zone exhibits collaborative works with traditional crafts artists in Kyoto and the latest music boxes manufactured in Japan, showing that music boxes are never outdated but are still part of the advanced technology of today and tomorrow.
At the Meister Workshop in the gallery building, visitors can observe technical specialists carrying out restoration or R&D tasks. The Multiuse Room is used as the venue of workshops, such as those on making music boxes. Event schedules are posted on the gallery’s website and social media account.
