The masterpieces of a refined man with tastes unparalleled in our times

The museum houses a collection of approximately 1,900 items that was amassed over the lifetime of Tokushichi Nomura II, who built financial conglomerates such as Nomura Securities and the former Daiwa Bank in one generation. The museum holds special exhibitions with different themes twice a year, in spring and autumn. Tokushichi（known by the pseudonym “Tokuan”） enjoyed a variety of hobbies and was one of the leading connoisseurs of modern times. He was deeply devoted to the tea ceremony and Noh theatre, and collected mainly tea ceremony utensils, Noh masks and Noh costumes. The museum collection also includes a painting “Tempest” by Sesson Shūkei, a calligraphy “Myō” by Sen-no-Rikyu, and a scroll by Hon-ami Kōetsu with designs by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, as well as other important artworks, including those designated as Important Cultural Properties and Important Art Objects. It is located very close to the north gate of Nanzen-ji Temple, and is surrounded by many tranquil villas. It is a scenic spot famous for both the cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves. You can relax and enjoy seasonal fresh sweets and matcha green tea at the ryurei（table-style seating） tea room inside the museum building.
