Learning about practical ecology in daily life in the city that sealed the “Kyoto Protocol”
Miyako Ecology Center was established in 2002 as a hub for promoting environmental education and conservation activities, in commemoration of the Third Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP3) held in Kyoto in 1997.
The exhibition areas on the 1st and 2nd floors feature interactive displays that allow visitors to learn about everything from global environmental issues such as global warming to Kyoto’s unique ecological wisdom through a “Look, Touch and Feel” experience.
On the 3rd floor, visitors can explore the Environment Library Corner, which offers a wide range of environmental books from picture books to specialist publications. There is also a Communication Corner, rental rooms, and a Wooden Toy Play Area where young children and their parents can relax and enjoy playing with wooden toys.
The rooftop biotope provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the relationship between people and nature.
The entire building serves as an Eco-Exhibit. Visitors can observe a variety of sustainable features, including solar power generation, rainwater utilization, geothermal energy systems, highly insulated exterior walls, energy-saving technologies, and the use of natural materials.
Visitors can also participate in environmental education programs and guided tours led by environmental volunteers.
